Grandmother sentenced to life imprisonment for granddaughter's death

A 50-year-old grandmother has been sentenced to life imprisonment by an Alabama court for forcing her 9-year-old granddaughter to run as a punishment for lying about eating sweets until she collapsed.

A neighbour testified at the murder trial that he had seen Joyce Hardin telling Savannah Hardin to keep running until she tells her to stop.

Joyce defending herself said she didn't mean to harm her granddaughter but was encouraging her to run faster after she finished second in a school race.

The young girl was rushed to hospital but died three days later.
